Special appointment of Wim Bernasco

Wim Bernasco has been appointed professor by special appointment Urban geography of crime and security at the University of Amsterdam. The chair is a collaboration between the University of Amsterdam and the NSCR, and will is hosted by the programme group Urban Geographies in the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. Wim combines this endowed chair with his function as senior researcher at the NSCR.

For more than two decades geographic criminology has been one of the NSCR’s core research areas. In filling this chair Wim aims to connect urban geography and criminology by investigating crime and law enforcement from the perspective of urban geography. This implies exploring how socio-spatial processes such as tourism, mobility, school choice, digitalization and segregation relate to crime, disorder and public safety. An important concern is what role crime, disorder and public safety play in the emergence, continuation and disappearance of socio-spatial inequalities.

Wim Bernasco studied psychology at Leiden University and holds a PhD in social science from Utrecht University. He has worked at the NSCR since 2000. In 2013-2023 he was a professor by special appointment Spatial analysis of crime at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
