Behind Foreign Bars

Risk factors, experiences and consequences of imprisonment behind foreign bars

In 2024, the NSCR launched the research project Behind Foreign Bars. Over the next five years, research will be conducted into the thousands of Dutch nationals who have been imprisoned abroad in recent years. Scientific knowledge about this group is very limited because previous research has focused almost exclusively on prisoners in the Netherlands. This project will therefore investigate the risk factors, experiences and consequences for resocialisation associated with imprisonment abroad. Using a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods, the research project will develop knowledge to improve interventions, support and assistance specifically for this group of prisoners and their families. In this way, the negative consequences of imprisonment abroad can be minimised as much as possible.

In the coming years, more information about the developments within this research project and the research methods used will be published on this website. The publications resulting from this project are listed below.
