Welke hulp is er dan beschikbaar en hoe effectief is deze hulp? De meerderheid van de slachtoffers herstelt op eigen kracht of met steun van de directe omgeving. Een minderheid (7%) ontwikkelt langdurige psychische klachten. Het is daarom effectief om slachtoffers de eerste vier weken te monitoren en pas als de klachten langer aanhouden, te kijken naar een geschikte behandeling: <em>watchful waiting<\/em>. In dit hoofdstuk staan de mogelijke psychische gevolgen van ingrijpende gebeurtenissen centraal. We beschrijven de bestaande psychologische interventies en de bewijsvoering die er voor deze behandelingen bestaat.
